There is a curious asymmetry in how owners approach connectivity aboard. Weeks go into comparing plans and speeds — figures that are ultimately identical for everyone — and barely a few hours into deciding who will carry out the work. And yet the Starlink Maritime hardware is exactly the same whoever fits it. The only thing distinguishing one installation from another is the craft of the person doing it.

On a yacht, that distinction carries consequences beyond performance.

A necessary clarification: there are no official installers

It is worth starting by dismantling a widespread misconception. SpaceX does not accredit, train or authorise any company as a marine Starlink installer. There is no certification programme, no official list and no badge the company grants.

SpaceX sells the terminal and the service plan. Everything that happens between the box and your yacht’s deck falls outside its scope.

So when a company advertises itself as an “official installer” or a “certified Starlink partner”, it is using a label nobody awarded it. This does not make it a poor firm — it may be excellent — but it is worth knowing the term does not mean what it appears to.

What should actually be sought

The useful criterion is a different one: a marine electronics integrator with a demonstrable track record. A firm that was already fitting radar, chartplotters, autopilots and communications systems aboard before Starlink existed, and that has added this equipment to its catalogue.

The difference is not semantic. Installing Starlink on a yacht is not a Starlink problem: it is a marine electronics problem. Deck gland sealing, electromagnetic compatibility, electrical sizing, resistance to vibration and salinity. All of it classic trade, acquired over years working on decks, not on a two-day product course.

Why the bar is higher on a yacht

On a working vessel, a correct installation is one that works and does not leak. On a yacht there is a third requirement that admits no debate: it must not be visible.

This is not vanity. The installation affects an asset whose value depends, in considerable part, on the integrity of its lines. An antenna obviously bolted onto the flybridge, with cable running down the superstructure in plain sight, is precisely the sort of detail a surveyor notes and a buyer uses to negotiate downwards.

Three approaches resolve this requirement well:

Recessed in composite. The antenna is set into a GRP deck section and covered with a panel manufactured to match the finish. Standard GRP is transparent to radio frequency, so the signal is not degraded. It is the most discreet solution and the natural one during a refit or new build.

Structural integration. The antenna is built into an element of the deck architecture — a T-top, an arch — and disappears visually from any normal angle. Requires coordination with the yard or a composites specialist.

Chromatic resolution. Where concealment is not viable, painting the housing and mounting plate in the deck colour achieves notable integration with minimal complexity.

One technical warning worth retaining: carbon fibre severely attenuates Ku and Ka band signals. It must not be used as an antenna cover or placed above one. GRP and Kevlar composites are transparent to radio frequency and are the appropriate materials.

When DIY makes sense

It would not be honest to argue that one should never fit anything oneself. There are reasonable cases:

A portable terminal on a removable base, with no drilling, for occasional use in harbour. A seasonal mount removed in autumn. Or an owner with genuine marine electrician’s trade, who has made deck penetrations before and knows a polyurethane sealant from a silicone one.

In those cases, go ahead.

When it turns out expensive

The calculation inverts as soon as any of these elements appear:

Deck penetration. This is the point of no return. A badly executed gland does not fail on day one: it seeps slowly for months until it reaches the sandwich core. Repairing a deck with a saturated core costs a multiple of doing it properly.

Ocean passage. Continuous vibration and dynamic loads subject the mount to forces that simply do not exist in harbour. A mount that is impeccable alongside can start working loose two hundred miles out.

Coexistence with the rest of the electronics. The antenna shares deck and spectrum with radar, VHF, AIS and, on some boats, an SSB. Siting it badly breaks nothing obviously: it quietly degrades the performance of one or several systems, and diagnosing that afterwards is laborious.

Any aesthetic requirement. Which on a yacht is, in practice, always.

Eight questions that reveal the level of whoever is quoting

If you are assessing an installer, these questions distinguish the professional from the improviser with reasonable reliability:

  1. Will you inspect the boat before giving me a price? If the answer is no, keep looking. Nobody quotes a cable run they have not seen.

  2. Where will you site the antenna and why there? The answer should address obstructions, mast or superstructure shadow, and elevation angles. If it only mentions ease of fitting, bad sign.

  3. What sealant will you use on the deck penetrations? The answer should be polyurethane or polysulphide. If it is silicone, end the conversation.

  4. Will you fit an interior backing plate? On a sandwich deck the answer should be yes, or accompanied by a technical explanation of why it is not required in your case.

  5. How do you size the power supply? They should ask about your 12 V installation, your alternator and your battery bank before answering.

  6. How do you avoid interference with radar and VHF? There should be a concrete answer on separations and angles.

  7. What aesthetic solution do you propose? On a yacht this question is not incidental. If they have no considered answer, they have not worked with this type of vessel.

  8. What documentation do you provide on completion? The reasonable minimum: speed test, obstruction check, photographs of the deck penetrations before sealing and a signed handover record.

A solid integrator answers all eight without discomfort. Someone improvising becomes irritated around the fourth.
