The question everyone asks first

“How much does it cost?” is every yacht owner’s first question when they begin researching Starlink Maritime. It is a legitimate question that deserves an honest answer.

The reality is that the cost depends on multiple factors specific to each vessel: its length, the type of installation required, the navigation zone and the data plan that best suits your sailing patterns. That is why MaritLink does not publish generic price lists — we prepare personalised quotations for each case.

What we can do is explain what each cost component involves, so you arrive at the consultation with the right questions.

Component 1: Hardware

Hardware is the upfront cost. The Starlink Maritime kit includes:

  • Flat High Performance Antenna — SpaceX’s marine antenna. Compact, low profile, electronic satellite tracking with no moving parts.
  • WiFi 6 Router
  • Power and data cable — UV-resistant and salt-rated for exterior use
  • Base mounting plate

This hardware is the client’s property. There are no rental costs or mandatory renewal unless you wish to upgrade to a newer model in the future.

Component 2: Professional installation

This is the component that varies most. The factors that influence installation cost are:

  • Vessel length and type: a 12-metre ocean sailing vessel is a very different proposition from a 55-metre superyacht.
  • Level of integration: from a standard installation with external cabling to a full integration with the vessel’s network switch, entertainment system and separate networks for guests and crew.
  • Cable routing complexity: passing cabling through the vessel’s interior structure with no visible cables requires more time and work.
  • Port of installation: technician availability varies by location.

Component 3: Data plans

SpaceX offers different service tiers. The main plans are:

Mobile (Mobility) Plan

Ideal for regional navigation (Mediterranean, Northern European Atlantic). Allows monthly subscription pauses — practical for owners who lay up their vessel for several months.

  • Coverage: regional (per configuration)
  • Speed: 50-200 Mbps
  • Monthly pause available: yes

Mobile Priority Plan

For vessels requiring greater data capacity or priority data. Recommended for superyachts, charter fleets and owners working regularly aboard.

  • Speed: up to 220 Mbps (priority data)
  • Coverage: regional or global depending on configuration

Global Plan

For oceanic navigation without geographic restrictions. The option for ocean sailing vessels and circumnavigators.

  • Coverage: global
  • Speed: 50-250 Mbps

Plan pricing may evolve. At MaritLink we keep you informed of current prices and help you choose the plan that best fits your usage.

One of Starlink’s strongest arguments against conventional VSAT systems is economic. VSAT systems require large, high-cost hardware, complex and expensive installations, and 12-24 month minimum contracts with high monthly fees.

Starlink offers compact hardware at a significantly lower price, simpler installation and no mandatory commitment. For a yacht with moderate-to-intensive use, the saving over three years can be very considerable — with superior speed and latency performance.

No hidden costs

One point that sometimes causes confusion: Starlink has no hidden activation costs or plan-change fees. There is also no early cancellation penalty in most plans.

Frequently asked questions

Does the hardware price include taxes?
SpaceX prices are subject to local tax according to delivery country. In most European countries the final price includes applicable VAT. In the MaritLink proposal we detail all costs with and without taxes.
Can I pause the service in winter and not pay?
Yes. Starlink allows monthly subscription pauses. This is a practical option for owners who store their vessel during lay-up for several months. The pause is managed directly from the Starlink account.
Is there a discount for multiple vessels?
For charter fleets with multiple vessels, centralised account management facilitates administration. Contact us to discuss the best configuration for your fleet size.
Can I install the hardware myself to save on installation?
A basic installation is technically possible. However, to guarantee that the antenna is correctly positioned, the cabling is properly marinised and the onboard network is well configured, we always recommend professional installation. An error in antenna position or cabling can cost more to rectify than the installation saving.
